1959 cruise ship. Interior photos and small exterior photo. The Rotterdam was the last great Dutch ship of state employing the finest artisans from the Netherlands. In 1959 Arcadia was refitted with refurbished cabins and air-conditioning extended to all the accommodation and throughout the 1960s continued the pattern of line voyages interspersed with cruises from Britain and Australia including trans-Pacific.
Since 2008 a museum ship has been docked at Katendrecht in Rotterdam which also bears the name Rotterdam. The sixth Rotterdam was employed by the company from 1997 to last year. SS Rotterdam V 1959 On Oct 27th 1955 the Holland America Line HAL placed an order at the Rotterdamse Droogdok Maatschappij a shipyard in Rotterdam the Netherlands which mainly repaired and overhauled ships as its core business. That 1959 ship was the fifth Holland America Line ship to bear this name.

She was built at Vickers-Armstrongs Barrow-in-Furness Cumbria England and launched on 3 November 1959 by Princess Alexandra. SS Oriana was the last of the Orient Steam Navigation Company s ocean liners. Troopship 19391945 then reverted to liner becoming a cruise ship in 1959 and scrapped in 1971. Her service as a hotel ship ended after she partially sank at her berth after a storm in 2004.
