Canberra cruise ship. They had to take the fuel off to get her afloat again. Initially named PITTSBURGH but later renamed CANBERRA the ship was commissioned as a BALTIMORE - class heavy gun cruiser. This is to introduce Canberra a ship destined for greatness.
Since TITANICs sister ship. She was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast Northern Ireland at a cost of 17 million. My first cruise was on the Canberra in July 1974 when I was 13.
At 45270 gross tons she was the largest ship built there. In 1974 however Canberra underwent a major refit in which she was permanently converted into a one-class ship more in keeping with her developing role as a cruise ship. This is a family-friendly group.

Canberra sailed back to England for a refit as a one-class cruise ship with short cruises out of Southampton for most of the year and from Sydney in the autumn. The ship originally built as an ocean liner entered service in 1961 and was used in the 1982 Falkland War as a troop ship. Canberra was our second cruise and despite the age of the ship we loved the cruise which was to the Canaries.
The ship was named on 17 March 1958 after the federal capital of Australia Canberra. SS Canberra was an ocean liner which later operated on cruises in the PO fleet from 1961 to 1997. Canberra cruise ship has 1142 members.
